One thing at a time.

In this blog I will be documenting my struggles to do multitasking and what answer I found for myself. The flow of blog will be something like below.

  • Why I felt the need to do so many things at a time?
  • What did I learn from those mistakes?
  • How I am fighting the urge to do multiple things at a time?

Since lockdown I had ample amount of time in my hand and I explored a lot of different domains like reading books, watching television ,investment field, writing and a ton of interviews of experts in each domain. While listening to greats in any field helps you get the perspective of the field it does not make you master of that field. So I would start something and the moment it got difficult I would shift to something else. In this way I would be busy whole day without being productive. If some youtuber is telling you warren buffett started his investment journey at 11 years old you need to understand that investing is the only major skill warren possess and no one told him to be an investor it was his choice.

So when I started doing a lot of things at a time instead of it helping me I started to lose my attention span and ability to focus on hard things. While exploring is good and essential but due to that the next shiny thing started to be the distraction once the task at hand started getting difficult. So at the end of the day I used to feel good about working so hard but I rarely made progress in any of the domains I was exploring.

After struggling with this for months I finally decided that I will explore all the things which I like but not all at once rather one thing at a time.So firstly I decided that I will work on my programming skills first. So anything apart from programming I consider it as procrastination for the time being. I started listing out only one thing at the start of my day which I want to accomplish for that day. Then after completing that task only I would start thinking about next task. This is helping me not to worry about any irrelevant task for that time and focus much better.

Keeping the focus and keeping things simple is continuous struggle but acknowledging that it is hard and focusing on one difficult task at a time is helping me do my best. Hope this blog adds some value to your life.
